LEGAZPI CITY -- A suspected communist rebel was killed after the 30-minute clash between the Army soldiers and a band of New People’s Army guerillas in Albay on Monday noon, an Army official said Tuesday.
Danilo Nuel was found dead by the operating troops of the 2nd Infantry Battalion at around 12:45 p.m. in Barangay (village) Floresta in Jovellar town, Albay, said Captain Major Razaleigh Bansawan, spokesperson of the 901st Infantry Brigade.
Bansawan said the encounter was a result of information reported by residents of Barangay Del Rosario, Jovellar, Albay. “According to them, the terrorists NPA were in the area collecting moneys from the residents.”
The government troopers immediately brought Nuel to Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital (BRTTH) in Legazpi City but later declared dead on arrival.
The Army recovered six short magazines for M-16 with live ammunition, two cellular phones, documents and personal belongings.
Col. Marlou L. Salazar, commander of the 901st Infantry Brigade, said they are encouraging the people to continuously help AFP in its war against insurgency by way of providing information regarding the locations of the communist guerillas in order to have a progress and development in the Bicol region.
