LEGAZPI CITY – A barangay kagawad (village councilor) was gunned down by two unidentified suspects in Libmanan town, Camarines Sur on early Friday morning, a police official reported Saturday.
Jack Cuenca, 47 of Barangay (village) San Isidro, Libmanan was killed at around 6:45 a.m., said Chief Inspector Ayn Natuel, Bicol regional police spokesperson.
Initial investigation showed the victim was on board a Sym motorcycle, bearing the plate number 5186 EI, while two motorcycle-riding men waylaid and shot Cuenca.
Natuel said the assailants used .45 cal pistol to shot the victim, who sustained a gun shot wound at the back of his head and another shot on his body.
The suspects fled after the shooting incident while the victim was declared dead on arrival by the physician.

Rebels ambush military team in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY -- A Special Operation Team (SOT) of the 2nd Infantry Brigade here was attacked by undetermined number of communist rebels, leaving a soldier wounded on Thursday night, a report reaching Camp Simeon A. Ola said Saturday.
According to the report, the elements of the SOT, led by Sergeant Larry D. Tandoc were having discussions and small chats with the local residents of Barangay Mariawa, Legazpi City when the harassment happened.
However, “a power interruption ensued in the middle of their conversation, expecting that the electricity would be restored on Friday morning”, said Chief Inspector Ayn Natuel, Bicol regional police spokesperson.
Natuel said the local folks returned to their homes after the blackout, while the government team had also moved out.
Gun fires were heard at around 9 p.m., just after the power came back few minutes later, seeing Private First Class Vargas wounded and was hit on his head, police report showed.
The firefight between the military and the communist guerillas lasted for about five minutes.
On the other hand, the suspected NPA rebels carrying M16 and M14 rifles fled towards unknown direction.

Police manhunt for Espinosa killer in Masbate

LEGAZPI CITY – The Bicol regional police has intensified their search operations and police manhunt after the escape of the former Masbate vice mayor, who has been convicted of killing a Masbate representative, a police official said Thursday.
Florencio Jun Fernandez, 56, bolted the prison cell at around 4:45 p.m. at the provincial jail of Masbate on Monday, said Chief Inspector Ayn Natuel, Bicol regional police spokesperson.
In a statement, Chief Superintendent Paterno Bangui has ordered the conduct of intensified police manhunt operations against Fernandez, who has been serving a life sentence term at Masbate Provincial Jail for the murder of the late Congressman Moises Espinosa Sr. last March 1989.
Initial investigation showed that the prisoner was about to be transferred at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, when he escaped that afternoon, evading seven jail guards.
Natuel added in a statement that the PNP is closely coordinating with the provincial jail authorities and other government forces in Masbate for the conduct of checkpoint and chokepoint operations.

Armed men raid Gov. Salceda’s mansion

DARAGA, Albay – At least five unidentified armed burglars barged into the Governor’s Mansion of the President’s Economic Adviser Joey Salceda, in Daraga town, Albay, before dawn Monday, a police official said.
Superintendent Antonio J. Freyra, Daraga police chief said the caretakers of the mansion were in a deep sleep when the thieves forcibly entered at the back doors of Salceda’s home in Barangay (village) Peñafrancia in Daraga town at around 1:45 a.m.
However, Governor Salceda was in abroad during the robbery incident.
According to Freyra, Richard Mapa, 17, a houseboy of Salceda was tied in a post by the suspects, who wear masks to cover their identities, carting away their personal belongings, two Nokia cellphones (N70 and 1600) and P4,600.
On the other hand, the two house maids – Elmer Samper, 29 and his wife Jonalyn, 20 of Barangay (village) Gabon, Polangui, Albay were also inside the house when the harassment happened, said Freyra.
Freyra added that the suspects carried a 357 caliber pistol when they were confiscating those personal belongings and cash.
According to the witnesses, dogs were making noises at the front gate while door screens were being destroyed by the thieves, he added.
“The rain had just stopped during the crime scene so some suspects fled on foot, but found a single slipper on the grassy areas that belongs to one of them,” Freyra said.
Initial investigation disclosed that footprints on muddy grounds were traced by the police operatives
“We cannot deny that anybody can be a victim of crime,” he told local reporters.

Journalist slain in Masbate

LEGAZPI CITY -- Amid celebration of the 112th Philippine Independence day, a writer of a local newspaper was gunned down in Uson town, Masbate on Friday morning, a police spokesperson reported Saturday.
Antonio Castillo, 45, a correspondent of Bigwas tabloid was shot dead at around 9:00 am, while on his way home, driving his Honda motorcycle along the highway of Purok 1 in Marcella village, Uson town, Masbate, Chief Inspector Ayn Natuel, Bicol regional police spokesperson said.
Natuel added that the slain journalist was ambushed by two gunmen, who were riding in a Honda motorcycle with no plate number.
Initial investigation showed that the assailants, using unknown pistol suddenly fired shots at the victim, who were few meters behind his back.
On the other hand, the victim sustained gunshots on the lower portion of his back.
The witnesses immediately brought the victim to Masbate Provincial Hospital, however at around 12:00 p.m. Castillo died while being treated by the physician.
Uson Police is still investigating whether the killing of the journalist was politically-motivated.

3 teeners dead, 4 injured in Cam. Sur road crash
LEGAZPI CITY -- At least three persons were killed, while 4 others injured when two vehicles collided in Ocampo town, Camarines Sur on late Sunday afternoon, a police official said.
SPO3 Fernando Arejola said that a blue Kawasaki tricycle ( 8628 EE) driven by Allan Bravante, 17, carrying six passengers crashed with a JC Liner bus along Governor Fuentebella highway in Barangay Moriones, Ocampo, Camarines Sur at around 5:30 p.m.
The fatalities who instantly died were Marvin Aguilar, Eugene Vega and Allan Bravante, all 17, of Barangay (village) Himao, Pili Camarines Sur, Arejola said.
Initial investigation showed that the bus in a fast speed, heading towards Naga City was unable to control its brakes when a tricycle suddenly appeared on an opposite direction, overtaking a loaded truck.
Arejola added that the victims were on its way to Sagnay town in Camarines Sur when the head-on collision between the two vehicles happened.
The passengers who got injured were Analuna Albao, 17 of San Francisco, Canaman; Monica Ochales of Libmanan, Mark John Galon and Mark Joseph Pas, both residents of Barangay Himao, Ocampo, Camarines Sur.
They were immediately brought to Bicol Medical Center in Naga City due to their critical conditions, Arejola said.
